Cyclic vomiting syndrome is a rare disease and generally  affects to children. As it is rare some patients are misdiagnosed.

It is a disorder that appears with sudden, repeated attacks of nausea and vomiting that can last from a few hours to several days.

Its a type of abdominal migraine with recurrent vomiting.

Symptoms

Major symptoms of CVS:

  • Severe nausea and vomiting.
  • Repeated attacks in form of episode.
  • Episode can present from few hours to several days.

Treatment

  • As it is a rare diagnosis, there is no specific cure for a permanent relief. Only symptom (nausea and vomiting) treat with anti emetic drugs.
  • It is also includes migraine medication (Sumatriptan).

How do code CVS? 

In ICD 9 CM there is not any specific code for CVS,  so that cases can code with symptom codes.

After implementation of ICD-10-CM,  CVS can code specifically. 

  • G43.A0  Cyclical vomiting non intractable.
  • G43.A1 Cyclical vomiting intractable.
